1967 Excaliber Roadster

The Excalibur SSK was originally conceived by Brooks Stevens for Studebaker, as a show car for the 1963 New York Auto Show. However, when it arrived in New York, Studebaker quickly backed out, saying that a contemporary classic conflicted with the company’s newly embraced image of a “common sense car”. Not to be deterred, Mr. Stevens quickly procured a separate spot (away from Studebaker) to exhibit the car. The SSK was a sensation and inquiries from would be owners prompted the Stevens’ son to form SS Automobiles in August of that year. When Studebaker ceased production, the 289 V-8 was no longer available. The Stevens family had friends at GM, Ed Cole and “Bunkie” Knudson, who agreed to provide engines for the SSKs. The 327 cubic inch V-8s, in 300 bhp Corvette tune turned the light weight Excalibur in to a blistering performer (0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds with a 3.31:1 rear axle). Our Excalibur is one of only 37 roadsters built in 1967 and sports Silver paint and a Red Leather interior. It also has a set of Jaguar wire wheels, that were factory installed when new. We feel that the Excalibur is one of just two really unique designs that transcend eras. Designed by the legendary Brooks Stevens, produced in Wisconsin, this is one of the early Series I roadsters…one of only 38 ever produced. Powered by the Corvette 327, this automatic transmission Excalibur demands your attention. We believe that the future for Excaliburs of this vintage is very strong. Every year prices have escalated…slowly at first, but now they are reaching the level of where they should have been.
